Alarm System Maintenance You Can Do
Just like your car, your alarm system needs general maintenance to ensure it is working to its optimum ability. Australian Standards Compliance advises at least 1 service per year is required by a licensed Security Alarm Technician.
Unfortunately, with security equipment, we often don’t realise there is an issue until it is relied upon and it fails. Whilst most alarm systems will show/report a fault on low batteries, damaged cable, communications issues etc, there are many problems it may not show or report. Further, the fault advise protocol is also heavily dependent upon how your system was initially installed and programmed. Here are a few tip and self-maintenance ideas for you to ensure your Alarm System is working to manufacturer’s specifications:
- Clean your components regularly. Most devices can be cleaned by use of disinfectant wipes available at your local supermarket, or a slightly damp cloth. Give items like your keypad and detectors a wipe over.
- Remove cobwebs from detectors and their surrounding areas.
- If needed, spray surface spray around your devices.DO NOT spray on the device itself.
- If Geckos are an issue, a small dap of Vick’s Vapour Rub behind or nearby the detector can work wonders at keeping the Geckos away.
- Regularly activate your alarm system. We recommend once every 1-2 months, you arm you alarm system and walk around your site activating all the zones to ensure they have accurately detected you and if monitored, reported those zones back to the control room.
- Relace batteries in your remote controls and other wireless components (if you are competent in doing so) at least once every 2 years to ensure they are working to optimum range and ability.
- Change your Alarm PIN code if you believe other’s may know it.
